Safety at Home
People with limited grip strength can sometimes find it difficult to plug and unplug electrical items, and people with limited mobility can often find it difficult to reach plug sockets - particularly those that are low down or beneath furniture.

To address this, manufacturers have devised socket extension units that allow sockets to be raised much higher up a wall, and specially adapted plugs that have in-built loop handles that are easy to grip. Other aids include handles that attach to plugs via a self-adhesive strip, and fabric loops that can be attached to a plug and which also bear a clear label to prevent confusion.

Safety Aids and Care Call Devices

It's not always possible to prevent a fall but there are products that can help to minimise the risks and to ensure that prompt care can be provided. For personal protection, there are lightweight hip shields and to alert carers, there are numerous detector mats that will signal when the user's weight is no longer on a chair or bed. (Such systems can also be useful in cases where a relative is prone to confusion and wandering). Similarly, relatives can install automatic sensors that will activate if a door or window is opened unexpectedly, sound monitors that enable hands-free, two way communication, or care call paging systems with mobile actuators that the user can keep on his or her person to summon assistance.
