Caring from a distance – how to help your relatives stay safe at home
If you have relatives who are living alone and maybe have less support than usual, you will want to be sure they are safe at home.

It’s natural to worry about our loved ones – particularly in times like these when the best way you can care for them is by keeping your distance. At Complete Care Shop, we understand that just because you may not be able to see your loved ones it doesn’t mean you’re not thinking about them. That’s why we stock a range of products, from simple hearing aids to telecare systems, that you can buy to help keep your loved ones safe and well at home.

What is telecare and how can it help your relative stay safe?

Telecare includes alarms, sensors, medication dispensers and other ways to monitor someone’s wellbeing at home.

If, for example, you’re concerned about a relative falling at home and not being able to safely lift themselves up, a telecare system such as the Auto Dialling Panic Alarm can be used to alert you or a first responder. This alarm system links to your relative’s landline and comes with a button pendant, which your relative will need to wear at all times. If they do experience a fall, they can simply press the button on their pendant and this will call a pre-entered telephone number to alert you, or a first responder, that they need help.

If your relative sometimes forgets which tablets to take and when, you might consider a telecare device that alerts your relative to take their medication, such as the Medelert Automatic Pill Dispenser. Medication organisers and alarms give you and your relative peace of mind that they are taking their correct doses, helping to reduce worry and stress. If you currently pick up their medication, you could fill the organiser wearing gloves at home and then deliver it to their door. Alternatively, you might consider organising a phone call at the start of each week so you can explain which tablets go in each compartment.

Recommended products to help with sight or hearing loss

If your relative is living with sight or hearing loss, there are many products available to help them remain independent at home, including hearing aids, talking gadgets and products to help them see clearer.

If you have a relative with reduced clarity of vision, they may find it harder to read small text and see intricate activities clearly. You may want to think about getting your relative a magnifier as it can enable them to enjoy their favourite hobbies, such as reading and sewing, whilst staying safe at home.

There are also aids to improve safety at home for anyone with limited vision. The liquid level indicator is a unique aid that sits on top of a mug and beeps before the liquid reaches the top to avoid spillages. It is designed especially for use with hot water to minimise the risk of burns and dangerous spills.

If your relative is living with a hearing impairment, you might consider if they need a new hearing aid to ensure they can hear smoke and gas alarms, as well hearing the phone if someone calls.

How to check your health at home

Whilst many doctor’s appointments are being carried out over the phone, it may be worth buying your relative a monitor so they can check their blood pressure at home – particularly if they are prone to high or low blood pressure. The automatic upper arm blood pressure monitor is ideal for home use and has the ability to record 30 blood pressure readings. With a clear display and one button control, your relative will be able to easily check that their blood pressure isn’t too high or too low.

There are many daily livings aids that can help people to stay safe and independent at home. Complete Care Shop offer a whole variety of other household aids that can offer support, so be sure to browse through them and discover how we can help you and your loved ones.
