What is a commode?

A commode—or commode chair and commode toilet—is a movable piece of furniture that acts as a portable toilet. It can be helpful for those with limited mobility who find it difficult to get to the bathroom independently. A commode can be placed anywhere in the home so you or your loved one can easily access the toilet.

Now that you know what a commode is, this guide will explain how to use a commode, along with essential details such as its different uses, how to use one, and the various types of commodes available.

Types of commodes

Using the toilet is one of our most basic and important needs, which is why finding the right toileting aid for you or your loved one is essential. When browsing commodes, you’ll be faced with many options— with different designs, styles, and functions available, it can be hard to narrow down the choice.

Here are some popular choices of commodes and their features to make it easier for you:

Folding commodes

If space in your home is limited, choosing a folding commode is the perfect solution. These can be quickly and easily folded down, stored out of the way, and erected again whenever required. Portable commodes are also a great option when travelling.

The wheeled commode is designed to offer ultimate support for you or someone you care for. Similar to a wheelchair, it is fitted with wheels to allow for easy movement from room to room without having to leave the chair.

How to use a commode

Most commodes consist of a chair and frame, a commode pan, and a seat, with the option to add a commode cushion. Before using a commode, make sure the pan is clean and empty. Some people like to add a couple of inches of water, which may help with cleaning afterwards.

  1. Move the commode pan into place, making sure the lid is up, and check that the chair is secure and stable. It may be worth pushing the back of it against a wall for extra stability.
  2. If your loved one can move independently and without assistance, let them get comfortable. They should use the arms on the commode chair to make the transfer as smooth as possible. If they can’t move freely on their own, you’ll need to help guide them into the chair.
  3. When finished, the commode pan should be removed so it can be emptied and cleaned, ready for next use.
