Crutches are a great walking aid for those with reduced mobility due to injury, surgery, or neurological disorders. They provide support, allowing people to get around safely and independently, even when living with an impairment or disability.
Choosing the correct type of crutches for your or your loved one’s needs and preferences is important, as different types cater to different mobility requirements. We’ve created a guide to different types of crutches to help you choose the right one for you.
When purchasing a pair of crutches, you need to be familiar with the various types and their different functionalities. You may be overwhelmed when making a choice, but we’ve broken down the different types of crutches and who may benefit most from them:
Elbow crutches, also known as forearm crutches, are lightweight and equipped with arm cuffs and handgrips to provide added stability to those who need it. The handgrips are usually shaped or padded to reduce pressure on the palms. These types of crutches are generally used by those with reduced balance and strength when walking or those recovering from an injury where they can’t fully weight-bear.
Arthritic crutches are specifically designed for those with arthritis and reduced mobility; they can also be helpful for people with hand injuries minimising pressure on the joints. They have a cushioned pad on which users rest their forearms and a handgrip angled upwards for grip and stability without straining muscles or adding unnecessary weight and pressure to the hands and joints.
Most crutches have telescopic bars that allow users to adjust the height or length of the crutch according to their needs. This height adjustment helps you distribute your weight evenly across the crutches to reduce strain and pain, regardless of height. We also have the Double Adjustable Elbow Crutches - Extra Tall for those who need the additional length.
Bariatric crutches are designed to be strong and durable, able to support people with higher body weights. They’re height-adjustable, with arm cuffs and handgrips for added stability.
We have a range of specialist crutches for individuals with specific needs and requirements. Folding crutches are great for travelling and for those on the go; they can be folded and easily carried or stored away. We also have Flexyfoot crutches and Flexyfoot crutch ferrules, which are shock-absorbing to reduce impact and pressure on your palms and give you 50% more grip than the average crutch or ferrule.
Choosing the correct type of crutches for your needs is essential to ensure your comfort and safety. If you require a different kind of walking aid for more support, browse our range of mobility aids to find anything from rollators to walking frames and wheeled walkers.
